Ajax Baseline Glass Break Detection

Ajax Baseline Glass Break Detectors for Professional Security

With Ajax Baseline glass break detectors, windows and glass doors can be monitored as part of a wireless security system.

Ajax uses acoustic detection for this purpose. The detector analyzes the characteristic sound pattern produced when glass breaks and can then send an alarm notification to the Ajax system.

JBN Security Systems supplies Ajax glass break detection to professional security installers, system integrators, and business partners.

Ajax GlassProtect

Ajax GlassProtect is a compact wireless glass break detector for indoor use.

The built-in microphone analyzes sounds in the room and is specifically designed to recognize the distinctive sound of breaking glass. Ajax specifies a glass break detection range of up to 9 meters and a microphone coverage of 180 degrees for GlassProtect.

This allows a single detector to monitor multiple glass surfaces, depending on the room and mounting position.

GlassProtect can be used, among other things, for:

  • windows;
  • glass doors;
  • storefronts;
  • office spaces;
  • showrooms;
  • entrances;
  • other spaces with glass surfaces.

How Does Acoustic Glass Break Detection Work?

GlassProtect does not simply detect any loud noise.

The detector is designed to recognize the specific sound pattern of breaking glass. According to Ajax, this pattern consists of a low-frequency impact followed by the high-frequency sound of shattering glass.

This allows a glass break detector to be used as an additional layer of detection alongside, for example, motion detection and magnetic contacts.

However, the quality of detection still depends on proper installation and the acoustic conditions in the room.

Ajax CombiProtect

In addition to GlassProtect, this category also includes Ajax CombiProtect.

CombiProtect combines two security functions in a single detector:

  • motion detection;
  • acoustic glass break detection.

This allows a single component to monitor both movement in a room and glass breakage.

This can be useful for projects where both types of detection are needed at the same location and the installer wants to limit the number of individual detectors. The current JBN category includes CombiProtect in both white and black.

GlassProtect or CombiProtect?

The choice depends on the security setup.

GlassProtect is suitable when glass breakage specifically needs to be detected and motion detection is already being handled by another means.

CombiProtect is a good option when both motion and glass breakage need to be monitored within the same room.

For larger projects, different detector types can, of course, be used in combination.

Installation of a Glass Break Detector

The mounting position is important for reliable acoustic detection.

Ajax recommends taking into account the distance to the glass and any obstacles that could muffle the sound. Curtains, furniture, plants, and other objects can affect how the sound of breaking glass reaches the detector.

During installation, therefore, the following should be considered:

  • the distance to windows or glass doors;
  • the position of the microphone;
  • any curtains;
  • furniture and other obstacles;
  • wireless signal strength;
  • room acoustics.

After installation, it is advisable to use the Ajax system’s built-in detection and signal tests.

Wireless Communication via Jeweller

GlassProtect communicates with a compatible Ajax hub via the Ajax Jeweller protocol.

According to Ajax, under ideal conditions with no obstacles, GlassProtect can achieve a radio communication range of up to approximately 1,000 meters. In buildings, the actual range is shorter and depends on walls, floors, metal, and other structural conditions.

During a professional installation, the actual signal strength should therefore always be checked on-site.

Battery-Powered Glass Break Detection

GlassProtect operates on a CR123A battery.

Ajax specifies a battery life of up to approximately 5 years for GlassProtect, depending on usage and conditions.

This makes the detector suitable for wireless installations where a power cable to each detection location is not desired.

Glass break detection as an extra layer of security

A glass break detector does not automatically replace other detectors.

In a professional security system, different technologies can actually complement each other. Consider, for example:

magnetic contacts for detecting the opening of windows and doors, glass break detection for detecting broken glass, and motion detection when someone subsequently moves through the room.

By tailoring these technologies to a specific project, an installer can create multiple layers of detection.

Ajax Glass Break Detectors for Professional Installers

JBN Security Systems is a B2B wholesaler of CCTV, alarm, and network solutions for professional security installers and system integrators.

Within this category, we offer Ajax GlassProtect for specific glass break detection and Ajax CombiProtect when both motion and glass break detection are required in a single detector.

Do you need help choosing between GlassProtect and CombiProtect? JBN Security is happy to assist you with the application and system design.
