PoE Switches for Camera Security and Business Networks

Managed and Unmanaged PoE Switches
An unmanaged PoE switch is particularly suitable for installations where simple plug-and-play operation is desired. No extensive configuration is required, and the switch can be used immediately to connect and power network devices.
A managed PoE switch offers additional management features, such as VLANs, port management, QoS, network monitoring, and—depending on the model—cloud management. This makes managed switches a good choice for larger or more complex CCTV and corporate networks.
PoE, PoE+, and PoE++
When choosing a switch, not only is the number of network ports important, but also the supported PoE standard.
Depending on the model, a switch may support:
- PoE – IEEE 802.3af
- PoE+ – IEEE 802.3at
- PoE++ – IEEE 802.3bt
Devices with higher power consumption, such as certain PTZ cameras, access points, or intercom solutions, may require PoE+ or PoE++.
For example, JBN offers Reyee switches with PoE++ support up to IEEE 802.3bt and a total PoE budget of 120 W.
The PoE Budget
An important consideration for any PoE installation is the switch’s total PoE budget.
For example, if eight cameras each consume 12 watts, those cameras alone require approximately 96 watts. The switch’s available PoE budget must therefore be sufficient for all connected devices, including any peak loads.
When selecting a PoE switch, therefore, consider:
- number of PoE ports;
- power per port;
- total PoE budget;
- PoE, PoE+, or PoE++ support;
- Gigabit or Fast Ethernet;
- uplink ports;
- SFP or SFP+ ports;
- managed or unmanaged;
- Desired VLAN and management features.
PoE Switches for IP Cameras
PoE switches are widely used in professional IP camera networks.
A common network configuration, for example, is:
IP cameras → PoE switch → network/NVR
In larger installations, multiple PoE switches can be connected to a central network via Gigabit or fiber-optic uplinks.
Some professional switches also feature functions such as PoE Watchdog, which automatically restores power to a non-responsive PoE device. New Reyee models in your product lineup support such watchdog functions and cloud management.
